Eleven seconds of PCBN hard turning on a mill roll body. The clip is short on purpose: it isolates the moment where the insert enters the hardened surface and the load settles onto the edge.
What the clip shows
- PCBN insert, hardened roll body, finishing pass
- Continuous contact along the roll length
- Surface left behind by a hard-turning pass rather than grinding
Why this insert suits the cut
PCBN is the polycrystalline form of cubic boron nitride. On a hardened roll it holds an edge long enough to replace a grinding step, provided the machine can hold the roll without deflection and the stock is uniform.
Where this part is used
Roll shops use hard turning to bring a worn body back to size between regrinds. The alternative is grinding, which is slower and needs a wheel change for every diameter.
What to send with an inquiry
- Hardness range across the body, not just one reading
- Whether the roll is turned in place or between centres
- Chamfer or edge-break requirements at the roll ends
