Steel mill rolls and cast rolls do not behave the same under the insert. This clip shows a CBN pass on a steel roll body, where the material is forged and the hard layer is shallow.
What the clip shows
- Forged steel roll body under a CBN pass
- Shallow hardened layer, continuous cut
- Insert behaviour at the roll shoulder
Why this insert suits the cut
Forged steel rolls often carry a shallower hardened layer than cast rolls. Depth of cut has to stay inside that layer, or the insert drops into softer material and the surface changes character mid-pass.
Where this part is used
Steel mill rolls work in hot strip and plate lines. The roll body has to be re-turned on a schedule that fits the mill's shutdown window.
