Railway wheels are among the largest hardened steel parts that get turned rather than ground. This clip shows a PCBN insert working a wheel face.
What the clip shows
- Large hardened steel workpiece
- PCBN insert in a heavy single-point cut
- Long contact length at the wheel face
Why this insert suits the cut
A wheel is big enough that deflection is part of the process. The insert has to cut a hardened surface while the machine pushes a heavy mass, which is where PCBN's edge stability matters.
Where this part is used
Wheelsets are re-profiled on a schedule set by wear and by rail standards. Turning is faster than grinding and can be done on a wheel lathe in the depot.
What to send with an inquiry
- Wheel diameter and hardness
- Whether the wheel is turned on or off the axle
- Profile tolerance and surface requirements
