Peripheral Grinding of Cutting Inserts

0:19 clip · shop-floor footage · Huamin Tools

This clip leaves turning behind: it shows peripheral grinding of cutting inserts, the operation that produces the edge on a PCD or PCBN insert.

What the clip shows

  • Insert blank presented to a peripheral grinding wheel
  • Edge geometry formed in the grind
  • Coolant and wheel contact at the edge

Why this insert suits the cut

The grind sets the edge that will later cut hardened steel. Too much heat or the wrong wheel leaves micro-damage that shows up as chipping in service, long after the insert has shipped.

Where this part is used

Insert manufacturing is the front end of every hard-turning operation. Shops that make their own inserts, or regrind them, need the grinding step under control.

What to send with an inquiry

  • Insert material: PCD, PCBN or carbide
  • Edge preparation required
  • Wheel type and coolant currently used

Send the drawing, material and current tool problem. We will recommend an insert direction for the operation.
