Rough CBN Turning of a Mill Roll

0:19 clip · shop-floor footage · Huamin Tools

Roughing a mill roll is the opposite of the finish pass: the goal is to move stock without wrecking the edge. This clip shows a heavy CBN cut on a hardened roll body.

What the clip shows

  • Heavy stock removal on a hardened roll
  • CBN insert under continuous load
  • Body left with stock for the finishing pass

Why this insert suits the cut

Rough turning a hardened roll puts the highest load of the whole sequence on the insert. A CBN grade with a strong edge and enough toughness to survive the interrupted entry is what keeps the pass economical.

Where this part is used

Roll roughing is where cycle time is won or lost. A pass that needs an insert change halfway through the body is expensive on a large roll.

What to send with an inquiry

  • Stock to remove and finished diameter
  • Hardness and depth of the hardened layer
  • How many inserts the current pass consumes

Send the drawing, material and current tool problem. We will recommend an insert direction for the operation.
