CBN Inserts

CBN Inserts for Hardened Steel, Cast Iron and Hard Turning

Huamin Tools manufactures CBN inserts for hardened steel, cast iron and high-speed turning applications. Our cubic boron nitride cutting inserts are available in ISO shapes such as CNGA, TNGA, SNGA, DNGA, WNGA and RNGN, with grade options for continuous cutting, interrupted cutting, finishing and roughing.

CBN Inserts for Hardened Steel Machining

CBN inserts are widely used for turning hardened steel, bearing steel, die steel, high-speed steel and other hard materials after heat treatment. Compared with carbide inserts, CBN cutting tools can support higher cutting speed, better dimensional stability and longer tool life in hard turning operations.

CBN Inserts for Cast Iron Turning

For gray cast iron, chilled cast iron, high chromium cast iron and powder metallurgy materials, CBN inserts provide strong wear resistance and stable edge performance. Different CBN grades can be selected according to cutting speed, workpiece hardness, machining allowance and whether the operation is continuous or interrupted.

Common CBN Insert Shapes

Huamin Tools supplies CBN inserts in common ISO turning insert shapes, including CNGA, TNGA, SNGA, DNGA, WNGA, RNGN, CCGW and other customized geometries. The suitable insert shape depends on the workpiece material, machining method, holder type and required surface finish.

Recommended Workpiece Materials

CBN inserts are recommended for hardened steel, bearing steel, gear steel, die steel, high chromium cast iron, gray cast iron, ductile iron, powder metallurgy components and selected heat-resistant ferrous materials. Typical applications include hard turning after heat treatment, bearing ring finishing, gear finishing, brake disc machining, roll machining and large cast iron component finishing.

For aluminum, copper, brass, graphite and most non-ferrous materials, PCD inserts are usually a better first choice than CBN.

CBN Grade Selection and Technical Reference

For stable finishing of hardened steel, choose a grade focused on edge stability, wear resistance and surface finish. For interrupted cutting, roughing, heavy scale or unstable workholding, choose a tougher grade with better impact resistance. Final selection should consider workpiece hardness, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, coolant condition, machine rigidity and required surface roughness.

Engineering Review Note

Reviewed by Huamin Tools Application Engineering Team. Recommendations are based on CBN insert use in hardened steel, cast iron and difficult-to-machine ferrous materials. Before production use, cutting parameters should be confirmed against the actual workpiece, machine rigidity, clamping condition and tool life target.

CBN Inserts FAQ

What Are CBN Inserts?

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) tools are high-performance cutting tools made of super-hard cubic boron nitride material. Its hardness is second only to diamond, featuring excellent hot hardness, superior wear resistance and outstanding high-temperature stability.

Maintaining stable cutting performance under high-temperature conditions, CBN tools have great oxidation resistance, impact resistance and a low friction coefficient. They are specially designed for finishing, semi-finishing and high-speed dry cutting of difficult-to-machine materials such as hardened steel, cast iron, high-strength alloy steel and heat-resistant alloys.

Compared with cemented carbide tools, CBN tools deliver higher cutting speed, longer service life and superior machined surface quality. They effectively eliminate subsequent grinding processes, greatly improve processing efficiency and reduce production costs. Widely applied in high-end metal machining fields including automobile manufacturing, bearing & mold industry, engineering machinery and precision machinery, CBN tools are the optimal choice for hard-state precision machining.

How Are CBN Inserts Used?

  • Hardened Steel Machining

Ideal for turning, boring and milling of quenched and tempered steel, bearing steel, die steel and high-hardness structural steel. It realizes high-efficiency hard turning instead of grinding.

  • Cast Iron Processing

Suitable for high-speed cutting of gray cast iron, ductile iron and alloy cast iron. With excellent wear resistance, it greatly improves production efficiency and reduces tool consumption.

  • Powder Metallurgy & Sintered Materials

Used for cutting powder metallurgy parts, sintered alloys and other porous high-hardness workpieces.

  • High-temperature & Heat-resistant Alloys

Applied to the machining of high-temperature alloys, high-strength wear-resistant alloys and difficult-to-cut workpieces under high-temperature cutting conditions.

  • Mass Production in Core Industries

Widely used in automobile parts, bearings, molds, engineering machinery, aerospace and other industries, for mass semi-finishing and finishing processes.

  • Dry Cutting & High-speed Machining

Adaptable to dry cutting and high-speed cutting processes, cutting down coolant cost, simplifying processing procedures and lowering overall manufacturing cost.

What materials are CBN inserts used for?

CBN inserts are mainly used for hardened steel, cast iron, high-speed steel, powder metallurgy and other difficult-to-machine ferrous materials.

Are CBN inserts suitable for aluminum?

CBN inserts are not the first choice for aluminum. PCD inserts are usually recommended for aluminum and other non-ferrous materials.

Can Huamin Tools provide custom CBN inserts?

Yes. Huamin Tools can provide CBN inserts in standard ISO shapes and customized specifications according to drawing, workpiece material and machining conditions.

How do I choose the right CBN grade?

The grade should be selected according to workpiece material, hardness, cutting speed, machining allowance and whether the operation is continuous or interrupted.

Information to Send Before RFQ

To recommend a suitable CBN insert grade and edge preparation, please send the workpiece material, hardness, machining operation, current insert model, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, coolant condition, interruption level, required surface roughness and main tool life problem. Drawings, photos, current tool wear images and target cycle time are helpful for application review.
